Pinzolo, 18 May 2015 – The Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia was held yesterday, and saw riders from all over Europe and further afield test themselves on the gruelling roads of the Giro d’Italia’s Queen Stage. Entrants negotiated five categorised climbs – including the forbidding Mortirolo – over a race route 175km long.
The peloton of the Giro d’Italia will ride the same route in 9 days, during a stage that is expected to play a key role in deciding who will win the coveted Maglia Rosa. The current race leader is Alberto Contador, with Fabio Aru at 3″ and Richie Porte at 22″.
On 2 August 2015, RCS Sport and the staff of Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia will hold the inaugural Gran Fondo La Marmotte – Sestriere. In the magnificent region of theVialattea, on roads that will be entirely closed to traffic for two hours, riders will test their endurance on the Colle delle Finestre, which the riders of the Giro d’Italia will climb on Saturday 30 May in the penultimate stage of this year’s Corsa Rosa.
Participants in the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia Mortirolo have preferential entry to the event, which is part of the La Marmotte series of mass participation events.
