Stephen Roche – Gran Fondo Ambassador

Stephen Roche won the 1987 Giro d’Italia riding for the Italian Carrera team. Two stage wins both in the 8km time trial down the Poggio and the 32km time trial into San Vicenzo will not be what his victory will be remembered for. The stage from Lido di Jesolo to Sappada, where Roche, contravening team orders, attacked, and despite being caught, had the strength to counter attack and take the Maglia Rosa from teammate Roberto Visentini. The manner in which Roche led the race, and ultimately, won it, led to admiration both from the tifosi and race director Torriani.

Stephen had a long and very successful career. In 1987, his victory in the Corsa Rosa was just the beginning. He later went on to win the Tour de France the following July and promptly followed that with a victory in the World Road Championships in Villach, Austria, becoming only the second man in the history of cycling to win the Triple Crown. The other holder of this unique accolade is Eddy Merckx.

Stephen will be joining us over the weekend of the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia Northern Ireland to welcome riders, tell stories and to cycle.
